In a standout performance, senior guard Isabella Mauricio reached a significant milestone by entering the 1,000-point club, scoring 18 points in Saturday’s game. Mauricio demonstrated her shooting prowess, hitting 50% of her three-point attempts and finishing 6-10 on field goals.
Expressing her pride in Mauricio’s achievement, Elizabeth F. Turner ’98 Coaching Chair for Women’s Basketball Monique LeBlanc remarked, “I’m extremely thrilled for Bella as she truly deserves this accolade. Her contributions over the last four years have been invaluable to our program.”
Reflecting on her accomplishment, Mauricio shared, “It’s been a long journey, and achieving this milestone feels special, especially as I witness the growth of this team from two wins to where we are now and the potential for the future. It’s a unique experience to share this moment with my teammates.”
Junior forward Beth Nelson also shone in the match, achieving a personal best with four blocks against Cornell.
Since her return, junior forward Alyssa Moreland has made a noticeable impact, shooting 50% from the free-throw line, grabbing seven rebounds, and recording a season-high of six steals.
LeBlanc emphasized the importance of defensive focus during the game, stating, “I am really energized by this bounce-back win. We spent a lot of time discussing the necessity of defensive teamwork, and I believe the team did an excellent job executing our game plan.”
Mauricio set the tone for the Bears early on, sinking a three-pointer to open the scoring. Despite a strong start, Brown fell behind by one point at the end of the opening quarter, though they fought back, outscoring Cornell 11-5 in the second quarter to regain the lead. Nelson played a pivotal role, hitting a crucial three-pointer that tied the game at 14. Contributions from first-year guard Gia Powell, along with Moreland and junior guard Grace Arnolle, helped propel Brown to a narrow advantage going into halftime.
In the third quarter, Cornell surged, scoring 12 points and taking the lead as Clarke Jackson made a layup just before the clock expired.
Nelson initiated the fourth quarter with a layup, setting the stage for a strong finish. The Bears displayed their offensive strength, scoring 20 points in the final frame, including a crucial three-pointer from Young that extended their lead to 39-33. Mauricio capped off her impressive performance by sinking two free throws, marking her 1,000th career point. The Bears ultimately secured the game with a final score of 49-39 against Cornell.
