McGill Martlets Claim Victory at McGill Invitational

Strong Opening to RSEQ Season

On Saturday, the McGill University Martlets cross-country team officially kicked off the fall season by winning the women’s division of the McGill Invitational meet held at Mount Royal Park in Montreal. Demonstrating impressive athleticism, the team secured their second consecutive home victory and their tenth overall title from this event, which has been held since 1993.

Sienna Matheson Leads the Charge

Leading the Martlets was Sienna Matheson, a 20-year-old chemistry major from Kingston, Ontario. Matheson finished the six-kilometre race in a remarkable time of 22 minutes and 32 seconds, earning herself a silver medal. She placed just nine seconds behind the champion, Élisa Tripotin from UQAM, who clinched the title with a time of 22:23.

Key Performances from the Team

Alongside Matheson, senior runner Sophie Courville also made her mark, securing third place with a time of 22:38. The Martlets’ strong performance continued with the support of:

  • Lauri-Ann Menard (ninth, 23:01) – Freshman from Blainville, Quebec
  • Sofia Veilleux (19th, 23:37) – Sophomore from Montreal
  • Mia Blackmore-Barnable (24th, 23:49) – Sophomore from Toronto

As a result, McGill finished the meet with the lowest total of 57 points, showcasing a solid spread of just 1:17 between their top five finishers.

Team Standings and Upcoming Events

The competition saw Sherbrooke and UQAM finish in second and third places respectively, with scores of 69 and 80 points. Other notable teams included Laval, UQTR, Montreal, UQAC, Concordia, and ETS, rounding up the field. The Martlets will strive to maintain their momentum in upcoming races, with the next event scheduled to be the Carleton Capitol Challenge, also a six-kilometre race, set for September 27 in Ottawa.
