Marsha’s: Philadelphia’s First Women’s Sports Bar Opening Soon
Official Opening Date
Marsha’s is slated to open on South Street on September 19th, marking a significant milestone as Philadelphia’s inaugural bar that focuses exclusively on women’s sports.
Founder’s Journey
The brainchild behind Marsha’s, Chivonn Anderson, hails from Olney and has a lifelong passion for sports. A transformative trip in 2019 to Paris, where she attended the FIFA Women’s World Cup, ignited her vision. During that trip, she donned a Megan Rapinoe jersey and carried a Pride flag while cheering from the stands.
However, her experience back in Philadelphia during the FIFA final highlighted a gap in offerings for women’s sports fans. A local bartender denied her request to broadcast the match, instead opting to show the Phillies game, prompting her resolve to create a specialized venue.
Unique Venue Features
The interior of Marsha’s will feature a prominent mural of Marsha P. Johnson—a tribute to a leading figure in the LGBTQ+ rights movement. This artistic centerpiece reflects the bar’s commitment not only to women’s sports but also to inclusivity and celebration of diverse identities.
Business Foundations
Chivonn Anderson brings invaluable experience from the service industry and is also a licensed real estate agent. She has taken the initiative to purchase the building and the necessary permits to ensure Marsha’s is a permanent establishment in the community.
Future Plans
Looking ahead, there are plans to transform the second floor into an event space, creating opportunities for various gatherings and celebrations centered around women’s sports. Anderson envisions expanding Marsha’s to multiple locations regionally and nationally, providing fans across the country with a dedicated space to support female athletics.
