Maritime College Volleyball Faces Tough Match Against St. Joseph’s Brooklyn
THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College volleyball team recently encountered a challenging matchup against St. Joseph’s Brooklyn at Riesenberg Gymnasium. The Privateers, sporting an 8-10 overall record and a 1-5 record in the Skyline Conference, fought hard but ultimately fell to the Bears, who now hold a 9-7 overall record and a 4-2 Skyline record. The match concluded with set scores of 21-25, 32-30, 25-17, and 25-11.
Match Highlights
The game began with Maritime establishing an early 5-2 lead in the first set. However, the Bears responded and took the lead with a 9-5 run, briefly going ahead 11-10. Maritime regained momentum with a string of points, leading 17-14 at one point. A significant turn came when Olivia Casabona recorded a pivotal kill, which sparked a 4-0 run, culminating in a 25-21 set win for the Privateers.
The second set was marked by competitive play, featuring 21 ties and 10 lead changes. After a key kill from Addison Weist put Maritime ahead 16-12, St. Joseph’s Brooklyn countered with five consecutive points to take a 17-16 lead. The set was fiercely contested, with Maritime earning the first set point at 24-23. Yet, the Bears ultimately prevailed, winning the set 32-30 after overcoming multiple set points.
Subsequent Sets
In the third set, Maritime opened with a brief lead, but the Bears quickly equalized. St. Joseph’s Brooklyn’s strong finish allowed them to end the set on a 12-3 run, securing a 25-17 victory and a 2-1 match lead. The Bears dominated the fourth set, beginning with a 6-0 run and extending their lead to 13-4. Despite a brief resurgence from Maritime, St. Joseph’s Brooklyn finished strong, winning the set 25-11 and clinching a 3-1 match victory.
Player Performances
Weist had a standout performance with a career-best 19 kills and 10 digs, marking her second collegiate double-double. Ashley Pavarini also made a significant contribution to the team with 10 kills and 14 digs. Additionally, Mikaela Thiel recorded 35 assists and 17 digs, while Casabona achieved a match-high of 23 digs alongside five assists. Joan Anastasiades added 15 digs, contributing to Maritime’s overall edge in digs, 92-85.
For St. Joseph’s Brooklyn, Taylor Knight delivered an impressive performance, tallying 20 kills with an excellent hitting percentage of .475. She also secured a double-double with 15 digs. Carissa Zwiefelhofer achieved a triple-double, contributing 11 kills, 11 assists, and 11 digs. Notable performances also came from Abigail Encinia, who posted 14 assists and 14 digs, and Juliette DiVittorio, who made notable contributions in digs and service aces.

Maritime College will aim to bounce back in their next match against Old Westbury, scheduled for 11:00 AM on October 25, 2025, at Riesenberg Gymnasium. In their last encounter against Old Westbury, the Privateers secured a hard-fought victory in five sets, clinching the win with a narrow 15-13 finish in the final set.
