Ruth Chepngetich Provisionally Suspended Over Doping Violation
Ruth Chepngetich, the current world record-holder in the marathon, has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) due to a violation involving prohibited substances.
Details of the Doping Violation
A urine sample collected from Chepngetich on March 14 revealed the presence of Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), a diuretic listed on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) banned substances list. Notably, this test occurred shortly after her performance in the Lisbon Half Marathon, where she finished second with a time of 1:06:20.
HCTZ is typically used for medicinal purposes, such as treating fluid retention, but it can also be employed to obscure the detection of other forbidden substances. The AIU stated that Chepngetich’s urine sample contained an estimated concentration of 3800 ng/mL of HCTZ, significantly exceeding the WADA threshold of 20 ng/mL.
Investigation Process
Following the notification of the test results, Chepngetich participated in an interview with the AIU on April 16 and displayed cooperation throughout the investigation. On April 19, she opted for a voluntary provisional suspension while the inquiry continued. This was subsequently followed by a Notice of Charge and formal suspension in July.
Chepngetich retains the right to contest her case before a disciplinary tribunal.
Recent Competitions and Future Plans
In terms of her athletic achievements, Chepngetich is currently ranked eighth globally in women’s marathon running. Last year, she made headlines by becoming the first woman to complete the marathon distance in under two hours and ten minutes, clocking an impressive 2:09:56 at the Chicago Marathon.
Recently, she withdrew from the London Marathon scheduled in April, citing she was “not in the right place mentally or physically to race my best.”
