Understanding Women’s Health Issues in the Workplace

Recent research conducted by Irish Life Health has brought to light alarming statistics regarding women in the workplace. A notable one-third of women express hesitation about disclosing female health issues due to fears of negative repercussions on their career paths.

Key Findings from the Study

  • 29% of women reported taking sick leave specifically to address health-related issues.
  • 18% chose to use their annual leave for the same reasons.
  • Younger women, particularly those aged 16–34, face a significant impact, with 43% taking sick leave and 31% resorting to unpaid leave to manage health needs.

Workplace Support and Employee Concerns

Support for female health in the workplace has emerged as a critical issue. Nearly half (44%) of the women surveyed indicated they would consider changing employers for improved female health support.

However, only 34% of employers currently implement dedicated policies catering to female health, and less than 41% of women feel adequately supported by their existing workplaces.

Common Health Concerns

The study identified several prevalent health issues affecting women during work hours:

  • Menstrual issues (46%)
  • Fertility challenges (38%)
  • Symptoms related to perimenopause or menopause (33%)

These conditions have significant implications for women’s performance and overall well-being at work.

Expert Insights

Ann Marie Nestor, Managing Director at Irish Life Health, stated: “At Irish Life Health, we’re committed to supporting women across every stage of their health journey—at home and in the workplace. It’s concerning to see how many women still feel uncomfortable discussing their health at work due to fears of negative career repercussions. Supporting female health isn’t just a benefit—it’s a necessity.”

WellFem Tent at WellFest 2025

In an effort to address these issues, Irish Life Health is sponsoring the WellFem Tent at WellFest 2025, which focuses exclusively on women’s health. This initiative will feature expert talks, panel discussions, and opportunities for attendees to engage in one-on-one conversations with professionals in the field.

Dr. Máire Finn, a GP specializing in female health, emphasized the importance of open discussions on these topics: “These findings shine a light on the ongoing challenges many women face when it comes to their health. The WellFem tent is a brilliant opportunity to start more open conversations and help break down the stigma that still exists around female health topics.”

Prominent speakers scheduled to appear include:

  • Dr. Máire Finn, female health GP
  • Deirdre O’Neill, Hertility
  • Aoife Harvey, women’s health physiotherapist
  • Dr. Michelle Hone & Dr. Sarah Kelly, founders of Herology
