Mandira Bedi’s Pioneering Role in Supporting Women’s Cricket in India

Last Updated: November 04, 2025, 09:42 IST

Trailblazer for Women in Cricket

Long before India’s women cricketers achieved recognition as national heroes, Mandira Bedi emerged as a pivotal figure in the landscape of women’s cricket. Not only did she act as a prominent voice in cricket broadcasting, but she also provided financial support to the Women’s Cricket Association of India (WCAI) during a critical time for the team.

Challenges in Women’s Cricket

The lack of financial backing for women’s cricket in India was stark. During an era when the Women’s Cricket Association struggled to secure funding, players often faced the grim reality of limited resources. As Nutan Gavaskar noted, “There was no money—but all those women played for the sheer passion and love of the game.”

Mandira’s Impact through Philanthropy

Recognizing the dire need for assistance, Mandira Bedi took actionable steps to help. According to Nutan Gavaskar, Mandira donated her entire endorsement fee from a commercial with a prominent diamond brand to the WCAI. This contribution was instrumental in providing air tickets for the Indian women’s team’s tour of England.

Reflecting on her contribution, Mandira stated, “The money I would have taken for my endorsement will go towards the cricket sponsorship.” Her efforts not only provided immediate support but also encouraged corporate partners to consider investments in women’s cricket.

A Lasting Legacy

Mandira Bedi’s support did not end with financial contributions. Following India’s emotional victory in the World Cup in Mumbai, she shared a heartfelt message on Instagram: “You didn’t play for a nation, you moved it.” Her words underscored the profound impact of the women’s cricket team’s achievement on the nation and the sport.

Her journey as the first woman to host the ICC Cricket World Cup helped reshape the narrative surrounding women in sports broadcasting, challenging stereotypes and paving the way for future generations.

By highlighting the challenges faced by women’s cricket and supporting the players, Mandira Bedi has cemented her legacy as a champion for gender equality in sports.

This article provides a comprehensive overview of Mandira Bedi’s contributions to women’s cricket in India, presenting key details in a structured and engaging way while adhering to the specified guidelines.
