Introduction of New Assistant Coach
Pepperdine University’s women’s basketball program has welcomed its fourth assistant coach, Makena Mastora, as announced by head coach Katie Faulkner on Friday. Mastora, a recent graduate, brings a fresh perspective to the coaching staff after an impactful playing career.
Makena Mastora: A Return to Pepperdine
Mastora rejoins the Waves following her performance during the 2024-25 season, where she distinguished herself as a key contributor on the court, leading the team in rebounds with an average of 4.8 per game. Her experience as a former player is expected to enrich the team’s dynamics.
Coaching Journey Begins
This marks Mastora’s inaugural coaching position, stepping into a role that aligns with her passion for basketball after completing her degree in May. Her immediate focus will be contributing to the coaching strategies during Faulkner’s second year as head coach.
Coach Faulkner’s Enthusiasm
Coach Katie Faulkner expressed her excitement regarding Mastora’s appointment, stating, “We are thrilled to welcome Makena back to our program in this new role. As a former player, she embodies what we’re about — people, competing, and growth. Her love for the game is unmatched, and she’s someone who wants to be around it every chance she gets. We’re excited to add her unique perspective and can’t wait to see the impact she’ll make on our staff and players.”
Mastora’s Commitment and Future Outlook
Mastora echoed her gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “I’m so grateful to Coach Katie and the entire staff for the opportunity to return to Pepperdine as an assistant coach. They have played a special part in my journey, and I’m excited to continue learning, growing, and giving back while being part of such an incredible team. I’m really excited for the season ahead.”
Upcoming Season Schedule
The Waves are set to commence their season with an away game against CSU Fullerton on November 4, followed by their home opener against Westmont on November 8.
