New Women-Focused Sports Bar Set to Open in Madison
MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – A new sports bar dedicated to celebrating women’s athletics is set to open its doors on the east side of Madison. The venue, named “Bernell’s,” is located at 2513 Seiferth Road and aims to create an inclusive space for sports fans.
Owner Rita Adair has named the establishment in honor of her late wife, Bernell Hooker, who passed away more than a year ago due to ovarian cancer. Bernell was a passionate advocate for women’s sports and dreamed of owning a bar that showcased female athletic achievements.
“She was humble, and she didn’t brag about herself at all,” Adair remarked. “She’s made history in women’s sports, especially in Wisconsin. So, I wanted to carry that on for her.”
A Legacy of Sports
Adair draws a deep connection to sports through her family background. Her father was a bodybuilder, her mother achieved national recognition as a swimmer, and her nephew, Amani Hooker, currently plays in the NFL for the Tennessee Titans. This rich heritage fuels her vision for Bernell’s as a celebration of women athletes.
Inclusive Environment
While “Bernell’s” will prominently feature women’s sports, Adair emphasizes that the venue will welcome fans of all sports disciplines. “There’s been conversation that if I say women-centered, that men won’t want to come, and that’s so not true,” she said. “This is a bar for sports that’s going to make sure that women are seen.”
Entertainment and Cuisine
The bar will continue the building’s long-standing tradition of hosting live blues music, a feature that property owner Dan Resnick requested to be preserved. In addition, Bernell’s will offer a menu of soul food, enhancing the inviting atmosphere.
Grand Opening
“Bernell’s” is scheduled to open on November 8, 2023. Guests can look forward to food samples and live music throughout the day, marking a special occasion for both sports and community engagement.
For those interested in supporting a venue dedicated to women’s sports and local culture, Bernell’s promises to be a welcoming addition to Madison.
