Date: September 26, 2025
Announcement of Induction
World Rugby has revealed that Lynne Cantwell, former Ireland centre, and Rochelle ‘Rocky’ Clark, former England prop, will be honored with induction into the World Rugby Hall of Fame. The ceremony will take place during a special event on September 26, coinciding with the Women’s Summit held in London ahead of the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 final.
Lynne Cantwell: A Trailblazer for Irish Rugby
Lynne Cantwell remains a celebrated figure in Irish rugby, holding the record for the most caps for her country more than ten years after her retirement. During her illustrious career, she earned a Women’s Six Nations title and a Grand Slam. Notably, she played a pivotal role in Ireland’s historic victory over New Zealand at the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2014, leading the team to its only semi-final appearance. Cantwell was versatile on the field, excelling as a wing, fly-half, and centre, and is now recognized as a key figure in rugby administration, currently serving as the IRFU’s Head of Women’s Strategy.
Rochelle Clark: A Dominant Force in Women’s Rugby
Rochelle Clark is celebrated as one of the best scrummagers in the history of the game. Over her 15-year international career, she represented England in four Women’s Rugby World Cups, helping her team secure the championship at the 2014 tournament in France. Clark’s record of 137 caps stood as England’s highest until surpassed by teammate Sarah Hunter during RWC 2021. Her character and talent have made her a significant figure in women’s rugby.
Recognition and Impact
The World Rugby Hall of Fame honors individuals who have significantly contributed to the sport while upholding values such as integrity, passion, and respect. Kevin Potts, the CEO of the Irish Rugby Football Union, expressed pride in Cantwell’s induction, stating:
“This recognition is not only a testament to her extraordinary achievements on the pitch…but also to her unwavering commitment to growing the women’s game across Ireland and the globe.”
Both Cantwell and Clark’s entries into the Hall of Fame bring the total number of inductees in 2025 to four, following the earlier inductions of Matthew Burke from Australia and Richard Hill from England.
Looking Ahead
This year’s inclusion marks the 175th inductee since the Hall of Fame’s inception in 2006. World Rugby Chair Brett Robinson celebrated the achievements of both inductees, noting their remarkable impact on the sport:
“Lynne was a generational talent…Rocky’s reputation as a world-class scrummager was deserved but her value went beyond that.”
John Eales, Chairman of the Hall of Fame panel, also lauded their contributions, reinforcing that their careers exemplify the core values of rugby, which celebrates integrity, respect, and solidarity.
