Lucy Charles-Barclay Poised for Redemption at London T100 Triathlon
Lucy Charles-Barclay, a prominent triathlete, is set to make her return to the T100 Triathlon in London on August 9-10. This comes a year after her disappointing retirement from the same event due to injury.
Current Standing and Ambitions
The 31-year-old triathlete currently ranks fifth in the T100 Triathlon World Tour standings. Her season highlights include a third-place finish in Singapore and a fourth in Vancouver.
Charles-Barclay’s aspirations mirror her achievements, as she aims for a podium finish in her home city, riding on the wave of success generated by other female athletes in the UK.
A Season of Celebration for Women in Sport
With key events such as the EURO 2025 campaign for the Lionesses and the ongoing Tour de France Femmes, 2023 is shaping up to be an exceptional summer for women’s sports in the UK. Charles-Barclay hopes to add to this legacy, noting the strength and depth of British female athletes as they prepare for the T100:
“We have so many Brits on the start line and every single one of the women are so strong and want to get on that podium,” she stated.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Charles-Barclay emphasizes the importance of showcasing high-level performances in triathlon to inspire younger generations. She remarked on the growing interest in women’s sports:
“British women are really showing what we can do and we can see that people want to watch women’s sport.”
Overcoming Challenges
Last year’s event was particularly challenging for Charles-Barclay. Diagnosed with coeliac disease just three months prior and suffering from injuries, she was unable to compete in front of friends and family, marking it as the only race she has not completed. Reflecting on that experience, she noted:
“Last year was obviously a really disappointing day for me and it was a real low point in the year.”
Preparing for a Fresh Start
Having spent the past year recovering and building her strength, Charles-Barclay feels revitalized. She expressed her excitement about returning to the T100:
“I’m really excited. I’m feeling so much more positive and healthier this season, I feel like I can take everything in my stride.”
Her goals remain ambitious, but realistic, as she aims for a podium finish, stating, “As long as I finish the race I’ve done better than last year but I’m in really good shape so a podium finish is what I’m hoping for.”
The Role of the Professional Triathlon Organisation
The Professional Triathlon Organisation (PTO) is supporting the event by providing 40 spots for the charity ‘Women In Tri’, aiming to enhance female participation in the sport.
Looking Forward
As Charles-Barclay steps to the starting line this August, she cherishes the chance to redeem herself and perform in front of a home crowd. The upcoming London T100 is not just another competition; it’s a celebration of resilience and the growing stature of women’s sports.
