Longview Man Pleads Guilty to Conspiracy in Murder Plot
TYLER, Texas – Brad Michael McKinney, a 53-year-old resident of Longview, has entered a guilty plea in a serious case involving a conspiracy to commit capital murder. This plea was made on June 23, 2025, under the supervision of Judge Kerry Russell.
Details of the Case
McKinney was charged with conspiring to assassinate the ex-girlfriend of Dustin Yates, a 51-year-old from San Marcos. According to an arrest affidavit, Yates allegedly hired McKinney to carry out the crime in East Texas.
Background Information
The victim had previously dated Yates but ended their relationship in the autumn of 2022. Following the breakup, she reported incidents of alleged violence to the police while residing in Houston. A detective had warned Yates against contacting her; however, the victim resumed receiving communications from him in late 2024.
Threatening Communications
Beginning in December 2024, the victim reported a series of threatening messages from a phone number linked to Yates. These messages included ominous warnings to “be vigilant” and references to an “expiration date.”
Conspiracy to Commit Murder
The affidavit details that Yates compensated McKinney to follow the victim. During their correspondence, they allegedly discussed plans to kidnap, sexually assault, and murder her. Yates reportedly suggested that McKinney film these actions.
Legal Proceedings
Yates was apprehended in December 2024, with McKinney being taken into custody the following month. Both men were indicted on March 6, 2025. A sentencing hearing for McKinney is scheduled for July 31, 2025. Meanwhile, Yates is set for a jury trial on July 7, 2025.
