Jackson County Couple Launches Nonprofit to Support Women in Need
SECTION, Ala. – In an inspiring initiative, a couple from Jackson County is collaborating with their community to create a safe and nurturing environment for women facing various challenges.
Introducing Where Hope Begins
Melissa and Chris Hancock have established Where Hope Begins, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting women in need. They are currently converting a building on Main Street in Section into a welcoming headquarters for their mission.
Identifying the Need
Melissa Hancock, who worked at the Turning Point Pregnancy Center in Scottsboro, recognized the urgent need for more services for expectant mothers, teen moms, and at-risk women. “I aim to assist every type of woman, regardless of motherhood status,” she shared.
A Home Away from Home
The new facility is designed to feel like a home, featuring a kitchen, toy room for mothers with children, a living room, and ample storage space. This environment will allow women to access a wide range of resources tailored to their needs.
Diverse Support for Women
The Hancocks plan to provide essential supplies including formula, food, clothing, toys, and furniture to help women regain their footing. The nonprofit will serve low-income families, expecting mothers, teen parents, and those escaping domestic violence.
“We will have those resources available. If there’s anything beyond our scope, we can connect them to the appropriate services,” Melissa explained.
Nurturing Spiritual Wellness
In addition to meeting basic needs, Where Hope Begins will also focus on spiritual growth. Melissa intends to initiate Bible studies at the Section location and foster mentorship relationships among women. “Women can greatly benefit from each other’s experiences, and we can create small groups focusing on various aspects of life,” she remarked, noting the potential for support groups for teen moms and others.
A Supportive Partnership
Chris Hancock has been a steadfast partner throughout this journey, actively contributing to the project while uplifting his wife’s vision. “We’re thrilled to establish this resource in our community where there is already so much support,” he said.
Accessibility for Women in Need
Where Hope Begins has launched a website where women can schedule appointments to receive assistance and access resources. This proactive approach aims to ensure women feel empowered and supported. “I want women to know they are not alone; there’s always someone in their corner,” Melissa expressed.
Community Involvement and Future Plans
The couple has successfully raised about $3,000 through t-shirt sales to fund the center’s supplies. While they anticipate opening the shelter in March, they are already accepting women in need and plan more fundraising activities in the spring.
In a community filled with compassion, Where Hope Begins stands as a beacon of hope and empowerment for women across Jackson County.
