Lizzo Discusses Challenges Amid Lawsuit in Women’s Health Interview
Lizzo graces the latest cover of Women’s Health, where she opens up about navigating personal challenges in the wake of a sexual harassment lawsuit while promoting her latest mixtape, ‘My Face Hurts From Smiling’.
Life During a Legal Battle
In her candid interview, Lizzo reveals feelings of isolation and paranoia that surfaced during the legal turmoil. Discussing the emotional toll, she reflects on how the lawsuits affected her daily life and interactions, stating:
“I got very paranoid and isolated. I used to walk into glam and be like, ‘Oh, let me tell you about this crazy s— that happened last night!’ I couldn’t do that anymore. I pushed everyone away. I wasn’t even talking to my therapist. I wasn’t present. I wasn’t open. I wasn’t myself anymore.”
A Breaking Point
Expressing the weight of her struggles, Lizzo confides that she reached a moment of despair, questioning her place in the world. She remarked:
“It got to the point where I was like, ‘I could die.’ I never attempted to kill myself or thought about it, but I did think, if everyone hates you and thinks you’re a terrible person, then what’s the point?”
Finding Hope
A turning point for Lizzo occurred when she attended Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour concert. The experience reignited her passion for life, prompting her to reclaim her self-worth. She shared:
“It made me feel like, wow, maybe I don’t want to die. Life is worth living. That was the kick-starter to me being like, ‘Okay, Melissa, get your ass in gear and take your f—— life back.”
Current Legal Situation
In August 2023, three of Lizzo’s former backup dancers filed lawsuits asserting claims against her. Recently, Lizzo moved to have one part of the lawsuit dismissed, arguing it infringes upon her First Amendment rights.
While a claim of fat shaming has been dismissed, the case continues to unfold, with serious allegations still active. Dancers’ lawyer Rob Zambrano provided insight into the claims:
“The meeting where Arianna was fat shamed, the nude photo shoot, and dancers being forced to be on ‘hold’ while not on tour. However, all the other claims remain, including sexual, religious, and racial discrimination, sexual harassment, the demeaning visits to the Bananenbar in Amsterdam and Crazy Horse in Paris, false imprisonment, and assault.”
