Promotion of Civil Discourse: League of Women Voters Hosts “Countering Polarization” Event
On a bright Saturday morning, over 50 individuals attended the “Countering Polarization” event, both in person and via Zoom. Organized by the League of Women Voters of Lee County, the gathering was fueled by strong coffee and aimed at fostering hours of critical conversation and personal growth.
Jack Ubinger, a moderator from Braver Angels, emphasized the importance of engaging with those who hold opposing views: “You cannot resolve anything unless you are willing to engage those who disagree with you.”
As participants settled in, Ubinger shared insights from Robert Putnam’s influential book, Bowling Alone, which highlights the growing disconnection among Americans from civic participation. He explained how while attendance at bowling alleys has increased, the number of bowling leagues has declined, symbolizing a broader trend of reduced community engagement.

Ubinger noted that Braver Angels was established to facilitate dialogue among individuals with differing opinions. A key component of their mission is equipping participants with constructive communication skills.
The panel also featured insights from Dr. Jan-Martijn Meij, the interim director of Florida Gulf Coast University’s Office of Public Policy Events. He addressed the significant role academic institutions play in encouraging reasoned debate on contentious topics. “It is part of a state mandate,” he explained, revealing that Florida universities are required to host events focusing on divisive issues, featuring speakers from a spectrum of ideologies.
This call to action resonated with attendees like Lorna Washington, who remarked, “How can we return to being civil in our conversations, not just as a country, but also within families and friendships? Issues like affordable housing, inflation, and education impact us all.”
While the panel may not have provided all the answers, it sparked an essential dialogue that needs to continue—hopefully over a strong cup of coffee and in the spirit of camaraderie akin to a bowling league.
