Kutztown Women’s Track & Field Highlights at PSAC Outdoor Championships
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Kutztown University women’s track and field team made a strong showing at the PSAC Outdoor Championships, highlighted by senior Sophia Knerr’s impressive performance in the 3000 meter steeplechase.
Knerr, hailing from Columbia, N.J., secured her second consecutive silver medal in the steeplechase with a personal best of 11:20.17. This achievement not only earned her All-PSAC Second Team honors but also elevated her to fourth on Kutztown’s all-time performance list. She notably surpassed her previous record of 11:22.61, marking her third career outdoor medal in this event, having previously won bronze in 2023.
Olivia Solomon also excelled in the steeplechase, finishing fifth and contributing four points to the team tally. Solomon recorded a time of 11:33.63, ranking seventh in program history. Additionally, Jensen Kraft made the top ten with a career-best of 11:46.27, finishing in tenth place.
The conditions were challenging, as athletes faced blustery winds throughout the day, particularly evident in the sprint events. Despite these challenges, Mackey Donovan stood out, recording the fifth-fastest time in the 800m preliminaries with a mark of 2:18.68, thus securing her spot in the finals set for Saturday.
In the 200m, both Beth Schearer (24.93) and Raechel Bonner (24.98) advanced to the finals, ranking sixth and seventh, respectively, in the preliminary rounds. Their times were also affected by wind assistance.
The Kutztown 4×100 meter relay team impressed with a third-fastest time of 47.50 among the 12 competing teams, ensuring their place in the final. This relay included lead-off Taniyah Lawler, Schearer, Bonner, and anchor Brook Smith, and the time tied for third in the program’s history.
After the first day of competition, the Golden Bears are currently in seventh place out of 15 teams, accumulating a total of 14 points. They trail the host, Slippery Rock, which leads with 54 points, followed by East Stroudsburg (42), Millersville (37), Shippensburg (32), and California (Pa.) (24).
Looking ahead to the final day of the championships, Kutztown will also feature athletes in the 1500m, 5000m, 4x400m relay, pole vault, triple jump, and shot put. Events will kick off at 11 a.m.
