Boston Marathon 2023: A Day of Records and Family Triumphs
Sibling Champions
In an extraordinary display of talent, siblings John Korir and Wesley Korir have both achieved the prestigious title of Boston Marathon champions. Wesley, the elder brother, won the race in 2012 amid challenging heat conditions. This year, John rose to prominence, clinching victory during the 129th edition of the marathon with near-ideal weather.
Men’s Race Highlights
John Korir finished the marathon with an impressive time of 2:04:45, marking the second-fastest win in the event’s history. This performance was notable as it was nearly eight minutes faster than Wesley’s winning time. At the finish line, John received a warm embrace from Wesley, who celebrated his brother’s achievement 13 years after his own victory.
Interestingly, the race wasn’t without its drama; John experienced a fall early on but recovered to secure his lead comfortably. The race for second place was much tighter, with Tanzania’s Alphonce Felix Simbu narrowly defeating Kenya’s Cyprian Kotut. American runner Conner Mantz completed the top four.
Defending champion Sisay Lemma withdrew from the race shortly before reaching Mile 17 after appearing to stretch his leg, leaving the competition wide open.
Women’s Race Breaks Records
The women’s race saw an electrifying finish led by Sharon Lokedi, who outpaced Hellen Obiri to prevent a threepeat and set a new course record with a time of 2:17:22. This finish was not only a personal best for Lokedi but also saw all three podium finishers surpass the previous record of 2:19:59.
Elite Wheelchair Races
Men’s Elite Wheelchair Division
In the men’s elite wheelchair race, Switzerland’s Marcel Hug secured his eighth Boston Marathon win, clocking in at 1:21:32 and setting a remarkable history of course records since his first victory in 2015. Hug expressed his admiration for the event, stating, “Boston is very special because it’s a very historic marathon. I like the course. I like the people, the crowd, the organization. We feel so very welcomed here.”
Women’s Elite Wheelchair Division
American Susannah Scaroni claimed victory in the women’s wheelchair division, finishing with a time of 1:35:20. This win marks Scaroni’s second title in the Boston Marathon, following her win in 2023, positioning her among a select group of American women with multiple titles in this category.
