Team Overview
Coming off a successful season with a record of 16-10, the Martin Luther College (MLC) women’s basketball team is gearing up for another competitive year. With a blend of returning talent and new players, the team aims to enhance their performance and make a significant impact in the upcoming season.
Key Returnees
Central to the team’s prospects this season are three returning starters:
- Mya Morris: A junior point guard, Morris was the top scorer last season with an average of 14.7 points per game. She also contributed 4.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game. Coach Dan Gawrisch emphasized her sharp shooting and leadership skills, stating, “She was First Team All-Conference last season. Her efficient scoring and court vision are vital for our success.”
- Lydia Feidt: The senior guard averaged 7.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game last season. Feidt is recognized for her defensive abilities and her smart shot selection. Gawrisch noted, “She has great court presence and brings both confidence and defensive strength to the team.”
- Ava Stein: A key post player, Stein averaged 7.7 points and 5.2 rebounds during her freshman year. Gawrisch remarked on her effectiveness in scoring and her role as a defensive anchor: “She gets to the rim well and provides a solid match-up against opposing players.”
Emerging Talent
The team is looking to fill the remaining starting positions with players such as:
- Anna Kieselhorst: Known for her defensive skills, Kieselhorst is set to increase her offensive contributions after leading the team in bench minutes last season.
- Ella Walz: A guard with starting experience, Walz brings high basketball IQ and defensive flexibility.
- Wilhelmina Wenz: A sophomore who has worked diligently on her shot during the offseason, Wenz aims to be a versatile threat across multiple positions.
Coach Gawrisch expressed enthusiasm for these players, stating, “I’m excited for some of our players who have been ready to start more games.” The coach expects a rotation strategy to emerge as the season progresses.
Focus Areas for the Season
The Knights aim to establish strong chemistry among their new lineups, especially after graduating key players like Emma Dorn and Lauren Paulson. Rebounding will be crucial, particularly since Dorn was MLC’s all-time leading rebounder.
“We have an opportunity for new players to step up,” Gawrisch noted. “While there may be a learning curve initially, I believe we can grow through these challenges.”
Offensive and Defensive Strategy
The Knights plan to adopt a fast-paced style of play, presenting various scoring options. Gawrisch emphasized the team’s versatility: “We should be able to score in multiple ways, leveraging both inside and outside shooting as necessary.”
Conference Outlook
Gawrisch believes the MLC team is poised to contend in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC), which he describes as highly competitive this season. “On any given night, any team can win,” he stated, highlighting the need for continual improvement and maintaining player health as key factors for success in the conference tournament.
