The Unyielding Spirit of Travel: Sarojini and Padmavathi’s Friendship Journey
In the small town of Mathamangalam, the bond of friendship between Sarojini and Padmavathi shines brightly, fueled by their shared passion for travel. At 72 years old, these childhood friends have embarked on numerous journeys, visiting over thirteen destinations, including one foreign location.
Reuniting Through the Years
Though their paths diverged when Sarojini married and moved away, the two women’s friendship endured. “We didn’t have telephones back then,” recalls Padmavathi, smiling at the memories of their limited interactions, which were often limited to family weddings and local temple festivals. Sarojini’s husband, Kaithprath Narayanan, served in the Indian military, allowing her to live in various states across India until she returned to Kerala in 1987 after his passing. Padmavathi remained in the neighborhood, and their reunion reignited their desire to explore the world together.
Embarking on Their First Journeys
Their early travels focused on significant temples, including Parassinikadavu, Sabarimala, Guruvayoor, and others in Tamil Nadu, such as Madurai and Rameshwaram. The enthusiasm from their children about their budding travel plans provided them with additional motivation. The friends soon joined travel groups that catered to their adventurous spirits, allowing them to explore renowned locations in North India like Gujarat and Rajasthan. Padmavathi fondly recalls their trip to Kashmir, where they rode horses during their pilgrimage to Kedarnath, describing it as “an unforgettable experience.”
International Adventures
Despite their many domestic trips, the duo’s international adventure marked a highlight in their travels. “Malaysia is the only foreign country we’ve visited,” they shared. Sarojini elaborated, “It was our first international trip. We saved our pension money for months to fund that journey.” For Sarojini and Padmavathi, the excitement associated with preparing for each trip is as joyous as the experiences they gather. “You shouldn’t merely see places; you should experience them,” emphasizes Sarojini, who cherishes the memories they have created together.
Excited for Their Next Adventure in Kolkata
Currently, Sarojini and Padmavathi are gearing up for their next adventure. Although they initially considered Bali as their destination, they ultimately opted for Kolkata, given Padmavathi’s previous visit to Bali. They plan to explore the vibrant culture and historical significance of Kolkata’s streets next month.
Conclusion
The journey of Sarojini and Padmavathi is a testament to the enduring power of friendship and the joy of shared experiences. As they continue to explore the world around them, their adventures serve as an inspiration for others, demonstrating that age need not limit one’s passion for travel.
