COLUMBIA, Mo. — On Friday, the Kansas Cross Country teams achieved commendable results at the Gans Creek Classic. The men’s team secured a fifth-place finish, while the women’s team placed seventh in a meet featuring a competitive mix of 26 teams in each category.

Men’s Race Highlights

Freshman Reagan Kibet emerged as a standout performer for the men’s team, completing the 8K race in 23:52.6 and taking ninth overall, which earned him six points in his inaugural collegiate cross country event. Senior Tanner Talley also played a significant role, initially running closely with Kibet before trailing to finish 65th.

Assistant coach Michael Whittlesey praised Kibet’s execution of the race strategy: “Reagan [Kibet] had a really nice race. He executed the race plan extremely well… He and Tanner moved through the field really well from 4K on.” Kibet’s final kilometer was the fastest of the day, enabling him to rise from 19th to ninth place among 253 runners.

  • Kibet: 9th place, 23:52.6
  • Talley: 65th place, earning 42 points
  • Ryo Higuchi: 52nd place, 24:24.6 (personal best)
  • Parker Walion: 57th place, 24:29.0 (personal best)
  • Quenton Walion: 91st place
  • Sawyer Schmidt: 95th
  • Hobbs Campbell: 114th
  • Lenny Njoroge: 152nd

Whittlesey acknowledged the potential for improvement within the team: “We needed to have our guys that were running as our fourth, fifth, and sixth, our veterans be up much higher to have a better overall team race.” Despite this, he noted that the young runners showed promise for the season ahead.

Women’s Race Overview

The women’s team also showcased their talents in the 6K race, marked by a strong start from Emmah Jemutai, who effectively managed her pace throughout the event. Kaitlyn Swartz crossed the finish line as the first Jayhawk, setting a personal best with a time of 21:00.7, placing 12th overall and earning ten points for her effort.

Whittlesey commented on their performance, stating, “Emmah had a good, solid race, and Tori Wingrove had a good, solid race… we need to be tougher through that part of it.” The women’s team executed their initial strategy well, with both Swartz and Jemutai maintaining consistent speeds as they approached the final stretch.

  • Swartz: 12th place, 21:00.7
  • Jemutai: 23rd place
  • Tori Wingrove: 50th place
  • Laya Erickson: 128th place
  • Naomi Hunter: 129th place
  • Olivia Krueger: Finished 140th
  • Mia Murray: Finished 149th

The team finished with a total of 242 points, positioning them seventh in the standings. Stanford claimed victory with an impressive total of 53 points, significantly ahead of second-place Texas A&M-CC.

Looking Ahead

As the teams reflect on their performances, Whittlesey emphasized the importance of learning from their experiences: “To me, adversity is what you always get in athletics, and how you become great is how you respond to it.” He is hopeful for the team’s potential, stating, “If we mature as well as we did last year, we’re gonna be in really good shape when we start hitting the championship phase.”

The Jayhawks will have some time to regroup before returning to Columbia for the Pre-National Invitational on Saturday, October 18th, at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course.
