Tufts University Women’s Sailing Team Secures Spot in National Championship

MEDFORD, MA (April 29, 2025) — The Tufts University Women’s Sailing Team has successfully earned an at-large berth to the 2025 Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Fleet Race National Championship. This prestigious event will be held at St. Mary’s College in Maryland from May 20 to 23.

Competition Overview

This year’s championship will showcase 36 competing teams, divided into two semifinal regattas. Each semifinal will consist of 18 teams, with the top nine from each advancing to the finals, which will take place over two days. Automatics entries to the national championship were granted to 12 teams based on their performances in regional championships, while an additional 24 at-large selections were announced via the College Sailing Instagram page, highlighting their outstanding performances throughout the 2024-25 sailing season.

Tufts’ Journey to Nationals

Among the qualified teams, Tufts stands out as one of 14 teams representing the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association (NEISA) at the championships. The Jumbos achieved a ninth-place finish at the NEISA Fleet Race Championship held on April 19-20 in Connecticut, solidifying their place among the nation’s elite.

In the previous year’s semifinals, Tufts finished 11th, narrowly missing out on a chance to advance to the finals. However, the team showed resilience by reaching the finals in both 2022 and 2023, finishing in 18th place during those national championship events. Historically, Tufts boasts an impressive record with eight Women’s National Championships to their name, won in the years 1984, 1986, 1990, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1999, and 2003.

Team Roster and Lineup

While the starting lineups for the national championship remain unannounced, the team’s recent roster for the NEISA Fleet Race Championship included senior Maisie MacGillivray and first-year student Sophia Hubbard as skippers. Senior Meredith Broadus and first-year Kiana Beach served as skipper reserves. In the crew positions, sophomore Eloise Goedkoop and junior Lilly Ladd contributed, with senior Annie De Alessi and first-year Amelia Traver as reserves.

As the Tufts Women’s Sailing Team prepares for the national stage, anticipation builds for a strong showing that continues the program’s rich history of excellence in collegiate sailing.
