Empowering the Next Generation: Women and Girls in Science Week 2022
The week of February 7-11, 2022, marks an exciting opportunity for female scientists and engineers to engage with students across local schools. This initiative aims to inspire young individuals about the vast possibilities within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Collaboration for Change
For the sixth consecutive year, CERN, along with the University of Geneva’s Scienscope and EPFL, is joining forces to celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. New this year, the Annecy Particle Physics Laboratory (LAPP) will also be participating in this impactful event.
Role of Science Ambassadors
During this dedicated week, volunteer female scientists and engineers will visit schools. They will share their personal career journeys, provide insights into ongoing projects, and may even conduct live demonstrations.
The goal is to reshape perceptions around STEM fields, demonstrating that these career paths are equally attainable for girls and boys. The hope is that some presentations will spark a lifelong interest in science among students.
Success of Previous Years
The Women and Girls in Science and Technology week has proven to be a success year after year. In 2021, despite a hybrid format, the program saw more than 20 in-person presentations along with over fifty conducted via videoconference. This ongoing enthusiasm highlights the importance of the initiative, and organizers are continually seeking more volunteer participants.
Volunteer Participation Details
Women engaged in any field related to STEM, including computer science, communication, or education, are encouraged to register. Key details for volunteers include:
- Priority will be given to candidates from CERN, the University of Geneva, EPFL, and LAPP.
- Each presentation should last for approximately one hour and can accommodate up to 30 students aged 7 to 15.
- While most sessions will be conducted in French (approximately 95%), English speakers are also welcome.
- Participants must attend an initial briefing session.
- Due to COVID-19 protection measures, those classified as vulnerable are not eligible to participate.
Health and Safety Considerations
As the situation regarding COVID-19 continues to evolve, organizers are closely monitoring public health guidelines. Should in-person gatherings not be viable, the event will pivot to a fully virtual format.
Get Involved
Interested candidates can find more information and sign up by the deadline of January 5, 2022, at 11:59 p.m. This initiative plays a crucial role in paving the way for future generations of scientists and engineers.
