Marist Women’s Soccer Battles to a Draw Against Iona
POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist College Women’s Soccer team opened its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) campaign with a spirited performance, resulting in a 1-1 tie with Iona this Saturday at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field.
Match Summary
The contest began without any goals, but the dynamic shifted late in the first half. In the 40th minute, Iona’s Dolene Smith scored the first goal of the match, assisted by Marissa Graziano, allowing the Gaels to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Second Half Surge
Emerging from the break, Marist demonstrated remarkable determination and control. The Red Foxes dominated possession, showcasing their offensive strategy by outshooting Iona seven shots to none throughout the second half.
The relentless efforts culminated just under two minutes before the final whistle. Freshman Jiji Sweiss, with a timely assist from junior Gabby Tirado, netted her inaugural goal, leveling the match at 1-1 in the 89th minute, thus securing a vital point for the Red Foxes in conference play.
Goalkeeping and Performance Metrics
Marist goalkeeper Maddy Catalanotti was instrumental in maintaining the team’s chances, registering one save during the match. The Red Foxes concluded the game with a total of 12 shots, five of which were on target, compared to Iona’s three attempts.
