Jessica Huntley: A Trailblazer in Women’s Flag Football
Introduction
Jessica Huntley, recognized as the Innovator of the Year by Women Leaders in Sports, has made significant strides in the realm of collegiate athletics, particularly in women’s flag football. Her journey spans from being a student-athlete to becoming a pioneering conference commissioner.
A Lifelong Passion for Sports
Residing in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and a proud graduate of York College, Huntley has been immersed in the sports world from a young age. Her father, a high school athletic director and coach, served as a major influence on her professional aspirations.
Career Beginnings
Huntley’s career trajectory began in Division III athletics, where she embraced various roles before her appointment as the inaugural Commissioner of the Atlantic East Conference.
“I was the founding commissioner [for the Atlantic East Conference],” Huntley noted. “In 2018, the conference needed a Commissioner, so I did that for six years, and that was a wonderful experience — creating something from the ground up.”
Pioneering Women’s Flag Football
Her innovative spirit led her to explore the burgeoning interest in girls’ flag football at the high school level. The momentum grew after she learned of high school matches being held at Lincoln Financial Field.
“I was visiting my sister in Philadelphia and read a really cool story about the high school girls playing flag football at the Eagles’ stadium,” she explained. “I thought, ‘That’s interesting. If it’s happening at high school, why can’t it happen in the college space?'”
Establishing a New Sport
Determined to convert this concept into reality, Huntley collaborated with the Philadelphia Eagles and RCX Sports to secure initial funding and support for the initiative.
“They were able to give us some seed money to get started, and we launched in the spring of 2024,” Huntley detailed, noting the rapid growth in participation. “We had four institutions at the time, and now, they’ve more than doubled, with the NCAA seeing over 60 schools sponsoring the sport at the varsity level.”
The Atlantic East Conference’s Historic Role
Under Huntley’s leadership, the Atlantic East Conference became the first in the NCAA to sponsor women’s flag football, marking a significant milestone in collegiate athletics.
“There’s always been trailblazers,” Huntley remarked. “This is about continuing to provide opportunities and leveling the playing field for young women in a widely loved sport.” The sport is gaining momentum on an international stage, and it has been announced as an Olympic sport.
Acknowledgment and Recognition
Huntley had the opportunity to witness the impact of her efforts at the inaugural women’s flag football championships. Feedback from young athletes highlighted the significance of this new opportunity.
“Some of the young women said, ‘Thank you. This is something we never thought we’d have the opportunity to do,'” she shared.
Her contributions were recognized nationally when she was awarded the title of Innovator of the Year by Women Leaders in Sports. “It was a lot of hard work — a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to get that off the ground, but all the support from our athletic directors, coaches, and others made it happen,” Huntley acknowledged.
Looking Forward
Despite transitioning to a new role, Huntley’s dedication to empowering the next generation of women in sports endures. She emphasizes the importance of mentorship.
“I really love that opportunity to educate and mentor,” Huntley expressed. “I had some other women leading me and helping me along the way, so I want to do the same.”
