Dr. Jessica Cundiff Named 2025 Woman of the Year at Missouri S&T

On April 9, 2025, the Missouri University of Science and Technology recognized Dr. Jessica Cundiff, an associate professor of psychological science, as the prestigious Woman of the Year during a ceremony held at Hasselmann Alumni House. This award celebrates outstanding contributions in teaching, research, and service.

Acknowledging Leadership and Influence

The Woman of the Year award is presented annually to a tenured or tenure-track faculty member who exemplifies excellence and serves as a role model for students. Dr. Cundiff received a professional development stipend for her achievements, generously funded by Cynthia Tang, Missouri S&T alumna and founder of Insight Industries Inc.

Recognition of Excellence in Advocacy

In conjunction with the award for Dr. Cundiff, Missouri S&T also recognized Jessica Gargus, assistant vice chancellor for student health and wellbeing, with the Women’s Advocate Award, highlighting the institution’s commitment to supporting women in academia.

Career Background and Contributions

Since joining Missouri S&T in 2015, Dr. Cundiff has made significant strides in her field. Before her tenure at the university, she was a visiting assistant professor at Colgate University and worked as a research analyst at the Computing Research Association in Washington, D.C. At Missouri S&T, she has delivered a range of psychology courses to both undergraduate and graduate students and has directed the ADVANCE Program since 2022, a National Science Foundation-funded initiative aimed at advancing equity in STEM fields.

Impact on Students and Faculty

Dr. Cundiff’s influence extends beyond academic instruction. One faculty member noted, “Many faculty have areas of expertise that can contribute to campus improvements in numerous ways, but not all willingly direct their scholarship in this way.” A former student expressed their gratitude, stating, “I feel very lucky to have a close relationship with a faculty member who has developed my confidence in my abilities as a student and employee.”

Acknowledgments and Awards

Dr. Cundiff’s accolades at Missouri S&T include the Faculty Teaching Award, the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Education, and the Faculty Excellence Award. In 2022, she was inducted into the Missouri S&T Women’s Hall of Fame, solidifying her status as a leader in her field.

Academic Qualifications

Dr. Cundiff holds a Ph.D. in social psychology and women’s studies, a master’s degree in social psychology, both from The Pennsylvania State University, as well as a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Texas at Austin.
