Japan Launches Consortium to Empower Women in Digital Technology
In a significant move to enhance female participation in the digital workforce, Japan has established a public-private consortium. This initiative involves collaboration between national and local government entities as well as private-sector companies. The consortium was officially launched on Monday and is spearheaded by Wakako Yata, a former special adviser to the Prime Minister.
Objectives of the Consortium
The primary aim of this consortium is to equip women with essential digital skills, thereby contributing to improved salary levels and economic independence. Yata emphasized the importance of empowering women as a critical, yet often undervalued, resource within the economy.
In addition to supporting women’s career advancement, the initiative seeks to stimulate regional revitalization. Yata remarked, “We want to boost productivity at small businesses in regional areas by leveraging digital technologies and unlock women’s potential.”
Collaboration and Support
The consortium is expected to foster an environment where women can take on active roles in their communities. Yata expressed optimism about partnering with 68 local governments that are members of the central government’s council dedicated to promoting workstyle and workplace reforms in various regions.
Further, Digital Transformation Minister Masaaki Taira voiced the Digital Agency’s commitment to supporting initiatives that ensure women can thrive in society. He highlighted the agency’s readiness to facilitate programs that realize these goals.
