Ireland Announces Squad for Women’s T20 World Cup European Qualifier

The Ireland women’s cricket team has officially unveiled its squad for the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup European Qualifier, scheduled to take place in Rotterdam from August 20 to 27, 2023. This crucial tournament will feature host nations Netherlands, Italy, and Germany, where Ireland will compete against each team twice in a round-robin format.

Gaby Lewis, celebrated for her recent nomination as ICC Women’s Player of the Month in July, will captain the squad. The squad boasts a mix of seasoned players and fresh talent, with Lewis and Laura Delany both reaching their 100th T20 International cap, while others like Prendergast, Leah Paul, and Arlene Kelly surpassing 50 caps.

The Irish squad comes into the qualifier on the back of strong performances, having triumphed over Zimbabwe in a three-match series and securing a 2-1 series victory against Pakistan. The only adjustment to the line-up from the latter series is the inclusion of Alana Dalzell in place of Louise Little.

Two outstanding athletes within the group are close to personal milestones that would set records for Irish women’s cricket. Laura Delany is just 21 runs away from reaching 1,500 runs, while Orla Prendergast is 54 runs short of the same milestone, with both also eyeing the 50 wickets landmark.
