Heroics Sports Lounge: Celebrating Women’s Sports in Iowa

The rise of women’s sports has garnered increased attention and appreciation over the past few years. However, sports bars catering specifically to women’s athletic events are still rare. Enter Heroics Sports Lounge, set to become Iowa’s pioneering bar exclusively focused on showcasing women’s sports.

Founders and Inspiration

The vision for Heroics Sports Lounge was sparked by Jami Behun’s experience at a bar in Portland, known as The Sports Bra, which is entirely devoted to women’s sports. Frustrated by the lack of local venues willing to air WNBA games, Jami sought to replicate this concept in her home state of Iowa.

Despite her efforts to establish a franchise of The Sports Bra in Des Moines, Jami responded to the setback by deciding to create her own establishment, partnering with Laquita Lucas to bring Heroics Sports Lounge to life. The new venue will be located at 2005 Ingersoll Avenue, the previous site of Juniper Moon.

A Unique Atmosphere

Heroics Sports Lounge is designed to be much more than an ordinary sports bar. Aiming to be an inclusive space celebrating women’s athletics, the lounge promises a vibrant and welcoming environment. The decor will feature brighter colors and a more lounge-like setup, including comfortable couches and coffee tables, distinguishing it from conventional sports bars.

Jami emphasizes that Heroics is focused on “empowering female athletes and creating a safe, welcoming place to celebrate them.” This commitment to inclusivity and support for women’s sports forms the foundation of their mission.

Diverse Food and Beverage Menu

While the venue lacks a full kitchen, Heroics Sports Lounge will offer a variety of drink options that go beyond just beer. The menu will include:

• Prosecco on tap

To accommodate food options, the owners are considering collaborations with nearby restaurants for delivery services, as well as the possibility of food trucks during major events.

Expected Opening Date

Although an official opening date has yet to be confirmed, the team aims to launch Heroics Sports Lounge by Thanksgiving. Interested patrons can learn more about the lounge and upcoming events by attending a pop-up event at Exile Brewing Co. in Des Moines on November 4th from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM.
