In a recent announcement, the University of Iowa women’s basketball program has appointed Jasmyn Walker as an assistant coach. This decision was confirmed by Head Coach Jan Jensen and P. Sue Beckwith, MD.
“I am so excited to welcome Jas to our staff,” said Jensen. “Jas is a bright, young coach with a skill set that will complement our staff so well. I am thrilled to begin utilizing Jas’ experiences and am looking forward to having her join our Hawkeye family.”
Walker comes to Iowa following an impressive coaching career, with previous positions at several universities, including:
- George Washington (2024-25)
- Purdue Fort Wayne (2023-24)
- Butler (2022-23)
- Ferris State (2020-22)
- Davenport University (2019-20)
“I’m honored to join the Iowa women’s basketball coaching staff,” expressed Walker. “Having the opportunity to be part of a program with a tradition of excellence and a national reputation is truly a blessing. I’m excited to work with an incredible community that has a lasting impact on women’s basketball.”
During her tenure at George Washington in the 2024-25 season, Walker achieved recognition for coaching Gabby Reynolds, who earned A-10 All-Rookie team honors. Her first Division I coaching experience was with Purdue Fort Wayne during the 2023-24 season, where the Mastodons finished with a notable 23-13 record. This impressive performance led the team to advance to the second round of the Horizon League Championships and win two games in the WNIT, including victories over Eastern Kentucky and Cincinnati, before falling to the eventual champion, Saint Louis.
The success at Purdue Fort Wayne included tying the program record for most wins in a single season, achieving 12 home and 11 away victories. The team also set records in points, three-pointers, and rebounds.
Walker began her collegiate coaching career at Davenport University in 2019-20, later moving to Ferris State. At Ferris State, she played a pivotal role in the Bulldogs winning the 2022 GLIAC Tournament. The team finished with a 22-10 record, advancing to the NCAA Midwest Regional quarterfinals, and two players received all-conference honors, including the GLIAC Freshman of the Year.
In the 2022-23 season, Walker enhanced Butler’s program by serving as the coordinator of recruiting and creative content, leading to a 10-game improvement in their win total during her tenure.
As an athlete, Walker excelled at both Valparaiso and Western Michigan, where she gained early recognition by making the Horizon League All-Freshman team. In her first two seasons with Valparaiso, she established a freshman record with 250 rebounds, averaging 10.1 points and 8.3 rebounds in her debut year. During her sophomore season, her stats improved, recording averages of 12.2 points and eight rebounds.
After transferring to Kalamazoo, Walker sat out the 2016-17 season due to NCAA transfer regulations. Once back on the court, she averaged 8.4 points and 5.3 rebounds in her junior year and concluded her senior year with 10 points and 6.9 rebounds, totaling 1,147 career points across 111 games.
Hailing from Muskegon, Michigan, Walker holds a bachelor’s degree in sports management (2018) from Western Michigan University, and she earned her master’s degree in 2020.
