Cleveland is a city shaped by resilience, an environment where overcoming challenges is ingrained in the community’s fabric. The economic backdrop here is complex, characterized by a blend of political power and poverty that demands considerable fortitude from its citizens.
My journey is a testament to the influence of those who encouraged me to strive for more than mere survival. Their support helped me find my voice in advocacy and philanthropy, fueling my pursuit of joy and justice. Although the path has not always been straightforward, it has been significantly shaped by purpose.
Academic Foundations and Professional Growth
As I embarked on my college journey, uncertainty loomed over my ability to graduate, especially while navigating a demanding academic landscape. Fortunately, the guidance of my political sociology professor provided me with the academic support necessary to thrive.
This mentorship played a crucial role in steering me toward a career in advocacy. My experience as one of the few Black women lobbyists at the Northeast Ohio Chamber of Commerce was initially daunting. However, over time, I recognized that there was no unique advantage held by my predominantly white male counterparts; it was a valuable lesson in acknowledging my own strengths and power.
Leadership and Community Impact in Seattle
Three years ago, I relocated to Seattle, where I now lead the Seattle Foundation. This area is renowned for its scenic beauty and progressive stance on critical issues such as voting rights and reproductive justice. However, the region is also grappling with significant economic disparities affecting many residents.
Within my role, I am privileged to support remarkable leaders, particularly women of color, who are dedicated to fostering a safe and prosperous community despite an often unwelcoming environment. Their contributions are invaluable, and they certainly deserve recognition and better conditions.
“We must center joyful leadership, where we prioritize collaboration, empathy, and rest.”
Redefining Leadership and Support Systems
To create a just society and a joyful Seattle, it is essential to appreciate the innate value of women beyond their capacity to overcome obstacles. While resilience is crucial, women should not be defined solely by their hardships and labor.
Emphasizing joyful leadership is vital; this includes fostering collaboration, empathy, and the necessary space for rest and reflection. Insights from organizations like the BIPOC ED Coalition of Washington State highlight the importance of sabbatical programs for strategic renewal, ultimately benefiting both leaders and their initiatives.
Moreover, it is imperative to cultivate genuine allyship from men in the community. While I am fortunate to be surrounded by a supportive network of women, many of my professional achievements have been bolstered by male allies. Dr. Ed Taylor, the previous board chair of the Seattle Foundation, exemplified this by facilitating my navigation through the complexities of a new environment. Increased participation from men in supporting women’s success is essential.
Fostering Future Generations
With the right resources and support, we can envision a future where young girls are not limited by the economic conditions of their upbringing. Instead, they can aspire to reach their fullest potential, with opportunities that truly reflect their capabilities.
