In 2019, shortly after the release of my first book, I faced a thoughtful inquiry during an interview: “Who or what is the greatest love of your life?” Without hesitation, I responded that my greatest loves were intertwined—the foundation I co-established, the partner with whom I started this journey, and our three children. At that moment, I was blissfully unaware of the profound changes that awaited me.
Fast forward to two years later when I found myself navigating the complexities of a divorce and, eventually, stepping away from the Gates Foundation, an organization I had devoted much of my adult life to. Approaching my sixtieth birthday, I embraced the unexpected notion that I would forge a new path, one that diverged from both my marriage and career at the foundation. This journey led me to a pivotal realization: life necessitates the flexibility to adapt our plans.
Navigating Change
Even after deciding to part ways with my husband, Bill, our intent remained to collaborate within the foundation. My belief in the organization’s mission made this a challenging decision. However, as I observed the shifting societal landscape, particularly regarding women’s rights, I recognized the importance of personal growth and adaptation.
The Catalyst for Change
Recent global developments, such as the reversal of women’s rights in various regions, have further fueled my commitment to advocate for change. The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade served as a wake-up call for me. I could not accept a future where my granddaughters might inherit fewer freedoms than I experienced. This prompted me to take action and prioritize the fight for women’s rights.
Innovative Philanthropy
Upon announcing my departure from the foundation, I voiced a concern that under-resourced organizations advocating for women’s rights often struggled to defend their ground. In contrast, those opposing progress had resources to push their agenda forward. My goal became to alter this dynamic.
- I immediately began mobilizing resources by making substantial grants to U.S.-based organizations dedicated to enhancing women’s influence and rights.
- I also implemented a novel philanthropic strategy by selecting twelve activists and leaders to distribute $20 million in grants, hoping their diverse perspectives would enrich my approach.
- Additionally, I established a $250 million initiative aimed at enhancing the mental and physical health of women and girls globally, focusing on uplifting grassroots organizations that deserve more attention and support.
Reflections on Personal Growth
The recent years have offered deep insights, fostering both humility and clarity. While my three children—and now, two granddaughters—remain my greatest joys, my resolve to empower women and girls has intensified more than ever.
