The demand for career transitions in today’s job market is at an unprecedented high. Surveys indicate that 60% of job seekers in the U.S. have changed careers at least once, and 69% express a willingness to explore new industries by 2026. a similar trend is apparent in the U.K., where 39% of professionals are actively searching for new roles in the coming year.

Among the various sectors, technology is seeing the most rapid growth. In the United States alone, over 300,000 new technology positions are projected for the upcoming year. Additionally, it is estimated that by 2027, over half of global specialists will require reskilling. As artificial intelligence shifts job demands, it presents a unique opportunity for individuals to transition into technology.

The City of London Corporation’s #TurnToTech initiative highlights this trend, featuring stories of women who have successfully transitioned into technology careers. As a member of the task force supporting this initiative, I would like to celebrate the journeys of five inspiring women who have proven that diverse backgrounds can lead to successful careers in tech.

Joanna Hawro: A Shift from Finance to SaaS Leadership

Joanna’s career began in investment banking and hedge funds, where she spent over a decade primarily in back-office roles. However, she transitioned into client-facing positions that required more direct interaction with technology. Recognizing her passion for tech, she left corporate finance and relocated to join a fintech startup as a SaaS Implementation Manager. In her current role, she oversees complex client projects, manages relationships with stakeholders, and leads teams. According to Joanna, “You are not starting from scratch. Your previous experience is your superpower.”

A proponent of “upskilling with intention,” Joanna completed a Python course to identify and fill gaps in her skill set. She advises others contemplating a pivot, saying, “If you have the idea to pivot, don’t overthink. Prepare and just do it.” Joanna emphasizes that job seekers should frame their non-tech backgrounds as assets in the eyes of potential employers.

Katrina Young: Crafting Her Own Path in Tech

Katrina described her early career as “adjacent to tech,” primarily working in digital marketing and project management. When faced with the need for software solutions, she took it upon herself to learn, starting with low-code tools and progressing to Python. Eventually, she took leadership roles as a Chief Technology Officer and Chief Digital Officer, among others.

Katrina challenges the stereotype of what a “coder” looks like, advocating for the inclusion of diverse talents in tech. She believes, “There is no single ‘traditional’ pathway. The right route is the one that fits your life.” Her journey exemplifies the need for creative and commercially-minded individuals in technical roles.

Alicia Osinibi: Transitioning from Education to Cybersecurity

After 14 years as a math teacher, Alicia transitioned into cybersecurity following her third maternity leave. Her interest in problem-solving led her to explore roles in tech, inspired by women who had successfully made similar transitions.

Now working as an Identity Services Control Officer, Alicia focuses on system protection and digital identity management. She credits her teaching background for equipping her with crucial skills for her current position, stating, “Teaching gave me the skills I use every day.” Her advice is to “Start small, learn continuously, and surround yourself with a supportive community.”

Laura Wilson: A Return to Tech After a Career Break

Laura’s career began in a major consultancy, but after a three-year hiatus, she returned to the workforce as a Technology Project Manager, despite initially lacking technical knowledge. Structured support, including a returner’s program and mentorship, empowered her confidence and skill acquisition.

According to Laura, “Needing help and structure is normal. It doesn’t diminish your capability.” Her experience serves as a reminder that with the right support systems, those re-entering the job market can thrive in digital roles.

Tasmia Niazi: Overcoming Barriers to Engineering Leadership

Having left school at 16, Tasmia worked night shifts in a supermarket while doubting her ability to pursue further education. Taking an Access to IT course marked her first step toward a successful career, leading to an apprenticeship at Lloyds Banking Group. Now an Engineering Lead in Site Reliability Engineering, Tasmia has even completed a master’s apprenticeship while raising two children.

“Upskilling alongside the right support and flexibility changes lives,” Tasmia asserts. Her story dispels the myth that one needs an elite background to succeed in tech. “I’m proof you don’t have to start from privilege to succeed in tech,” she adds.

In today’s tech landscape, transferable skills have become critical assets. Communication, problem-solving, resilience, and empathy are the backbone of effective tech teams. Every professional journey contributes to these skillsets, providing valuable experience to draw upon. Moreover, programs such as short courses, online learning, and mentorship play essential roles in facilitating successful transitions into technology.

This moment is not only a chance for individuals to redefine their careers but also a responsibility for employers to cultivate inclusive environments. By implementing support programs and embracing open-minded hiring practices, companies can foster innovation and performance, welcoming diverse talents into the technology sector.
