Bethany Joy Lenz Shines as Queen Azalea
Bethany Joy Lenz, the talented actress best known for her role in “One Tree Hill,” has been honored as this year’s Queen Azalea at the 78th annual Azalea Festival in Wilmington, North Carolina, the very locale where “One Tree Hill” was filmed.
Reflecting on her return to Wilmington, the 44-year-old actress and author of the memoir Dinner With Vampires expressed her admiration for the springtime beauty of the area. “Having lived there for a decade, I always look forward to spring, as it showcases a stunning array of wildflowers. The azalea festival is a treasured tradition that celebrates North Carolina’s community spirit and artistic culture,” Lenz shared.

Empowering Women through Shared Stories
Throughout her journey, Lenz has received heartfelt messages from women who have thanked her for sharing her own story of surviving a cult. “What’s truly remarkable is the outpouring of support from women who have faced abusive relationships or toxic environments,” she stated. “Every day, I receive messages from those who have found solace in my book, and that validates my purpose in writing it.”
The memoir has garnered a more favorable response than Lenz had ever imagined. “I’ve been blown away by how well it has resonated,” she remarked. “Working in this industry for so long, I often approach success with skepticism. But right now, I’m simply enjoying this moment.”

The Journey of Resilience
In her memoir, Dinner For Vampires: Life on a Cult TV Series (While Also in an Actual Cult!), Lenz recounts her experience of leading a double life—portraying Haley James Scott on “One Tree Hill” while being involved in a restrictive ultra-Christian group that controlled every facet of her life. After a decade, she emerged with little to show for her efforts, grappling with feelings of shame for not recognizing her situation sooner.
As a co-host of the podcast “Drama Queens,” alongside former co-stars Sophia Bush and Hilarie Burton Morgan, Lenz notes that her memoir has opened up dialogues with past colleagues. “I’ve heard from several cast members who expressed regret for not understanding what I was going through at the time. It’s refreshing to have these honest discussions, even after all these years,” she commented. “It’s fascinating how we can hold onto experiences for decades, and even years later, find joy in reconciling them.”
A Poetic Return to Wilmington
With the launch of her book, Lenz’s return to North Carolina has taken on a richer meaning. “Being back here isn’t just about visiting old friends; it’s about representing a celebration of the beauty of a place that felt like my sanctuary,” she reflected. “It’s an emotionally resonant experience for me.”
