Controversy Over Placenta Processing at Chinese Snack Shop
Recent reports have revealed that a snack shop in China is facing criticism for offering placenta processing services and selling capsules made from human placentas, claiming health benefits. This has prompted an official investigation.
Details of the Controversy
The issue first gained traction on April 6, following a social media post by a user who highlighted the practices at Auntie Congee’s Snack Shop, located adjacent to the Changzhou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Jiangsu province.
Images shared online showcased the shop’s sign, which notably advertised “placenta processing.” The shop offers customers the option to procure placentas, charging 800 yuan (approximately US$110) for those who do not bring their own, and 300 yuan for those who do provide their own placentas. The business claims to source all placentas from new mothers in a hospital setting.
Business Background
The owner of the shop, who has a background in postpartum recovery services, mentioned her capability to connect clients with maternity matrons for further assistance and services. In addition to her physical store, the owner operates an online venture titled Zixuan Maternity Matron Centre.
Official Response
The revelation of these practices has led to public outcry and has sparked an investigation by official authorities to assess the legality and safety of these services. Concerns have been raised regarding the ethical implications and the health risks associated with processing human placentas.
