A Strong Foundation in Education

Raised in an environment that promoted education, Dr. Sindi emphasizes the impact of her family, culture, and faith on her personal development. Dr. Sindi’s academic achievements are remarkable. She holds degrees from prominent institutions such as King’s College London, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Harvard University. Most notably, she earned her PhD in biotechnology from Cambridge University in 2001, becoming the first woman from the Persian Gulf to achieve this milestone.

As a trailblazer, Sindi has consistently worked to innovatively address global health challenges. In 2007, she co-founded Diagnostics for All, a non-profit organization that focuses on developing affordable diagnostic tools for use in low-resource settings. Among her most significant inventions are a biochemical sensor utilizing thermoelastic probes and the Magnetic Acoustic Resonance Sensor (MARS), designed for rapid on-site illness diagnosis.

Recognition and Influence

In 2012, Dr. Sindi’s impactful work led to her appointment as a Goodwill Ambassador by Irina Bokova, the Director-General of UNESCO. This recognition highlights her efforts to foster an ecosystem of entrepreneurship and engagement in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields, especially among young women.

Three years after obtaining her doctorate, Sindi became one of the first women appointed to the Shura Council, Saudi Arabia’s highest consultative body, which advises the King on key national issues. As a senior advisor at the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), Dr. Sindi continues to advocate for women and youth empowerment in science and technology.
