Indianapolis Sets Sights on Women’s Sports Leadership by 2050
Vision for Women’s Sports
Indianapolis sports-business leaders have articulated a bold vision to position the city as an epicenter for women’s sports by the year 2050. They believe the upcoming WNBA All-Star Weekend could serve as a transformative catalyst in that journey. Sarah Myer, Chief of Staff at Indiana Sports Corp, noted that the event provides a significant opportunity for both the city and the WNBA to capitalize on heightened fan and media attention.
“This weekend is expected to be a huge catalyst for the women’s sports initiative embedded within our long-term strategy, referred to as the 2050 Vision,” Myer stated. The organization’s commitment has led to an increased focus on using this event to fortify women’s sports as a foundational component of Indianapolis’ sports economy.
Event Planning and Community Engagement
Despite having approximately one year for preparations, Indianapolis has swiftly embraced the opportunity, scheduling around 60 ticketed events throughout the All-Star Weekend. One key event, WNBA Live, aims to engage fans with various activities.
An All-Star Game watch party, named “Fever Fest,” will also take place on Saturday, featuring music and comedy for fans unable to secure tickets to the sold-out game. Organizers anticipate an attendance of 4,000 to 5,000 at this community-focused celebration.
Ambitions for the Future
Blaine Zimmerman, Chief Talent & Marketing Officer of the Indy Chamber, expressed optimism regarding the event’s significance. “Having All-Star Weekend in (Clark’s) home city is going to be probably the most high-profile All-Star weekend in league history,” he stated, emphasizing the city’s aspirations to become the premier destination for women’s sports globally.
The vision includes not only hosting more major events but also potentially attracting new franchises, such as a National Women’s Soccer League club, and enticing additional sports-focused businesses to invest in the state.
