Kutztown University Women’s Soccer Triumphs in PSAC Quarterfinals
KUTZTOWN, Pa. – In a brisk and windy matchup held at Keystone Field, the Kutztown University women’s soccer team secured a convincing 5-1 victory over the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) Crimson Hawks. The win marks their advance in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Women’s Soccer Championships.
Strong Start by the Golden Bears
The Golden Bears, boasting a record of 12-4-1 and ranked No. 2 in PSAC East, showcased impressive offensive strategies led by All-PSAC First Team players Corinne Morgan (Port Republic, N.J./Cedar Creek) and Maura Day (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Abington). From the onset, Kutztown applied pressure, successfully converting a corner kick in the opening minutes thanks to senior Charlotte Rauch (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport).
Adding to their early dominance, Kutztown capitalized on a defensive error just three minutes later, with Caroline McDonald (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) netting the second goal, giving the team a swift 2-0 lead.
First Half Dominance
During the first half, Kutztown outperformed IUP in key statistics, registering 8 shots versus IUP’s 4 and achieving 5 corner kicks while preventing their opponent from any corners.
A Hat Trick from Morgan
Despite a late first-half goal from the Crimson Hawks, Morgan’s second-half hat trick sealed the deal for the Golden Bears. Her first of the half came at the 51-minute mark from a well-placed free kick by Day. Morgan’s relentless pursuit paid off again in the 74th minute when she sprinted past the defense to strike, concluding her scoring spree with a final goal assisted by rookie Sarah Erb (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central).
Individual Accolades and Team Stats
Day, recognized as the East Division’s Defensive Player of the Year, contributed significantly with two assists, bringing her season total to nine—tying her for sixth in the program’s all-time assists for a single season.
Overall, Kutztown dominated the match with 12 shots, 10 on target, and 7 corners, while IUP managed 5 shots and 2 corners. Notably, goalkeeper Morgan O’Donnell achieved her 12th win of the season, placing her in a tie for eighth in the program’s history for goalkeeper victories.
A Historic Postseason Performance
This victory marks a significant milestone for Kutztown, as it is the first time since November 2, 2010, that they scored at least five goals in a postseason game. The last player to achieve a postseason hat trick was Stephanie Borland over a decade ago.
Looking Ahead
In an impressive show of strength, all four East Division teams in the PSAC Championship emerged victorious against their West Division counterparts. Kutztown will continue their championship journey on the road against the top-seeded West Chester Golden Rams, having secured the right to host their upcoming match due to their earlier win over Clarion. They are set to face the fourth-seeded Millersville Marauders on Friday, November 14, at 10 a.m. Ticketing and viewing details will be announced soon.
