India Women Aim to Secure ODI Series Against West Indies
NEW DELHI: Following a commanding 211-run victory in the first match, the Indian women’s cricket team is poised to secure the three-match ODI series against a struggling West Indies side in the second ODI on Tuesday. Under the captaincy of Harmanpreet Kaur, India demonstrated a near-perfect performance in the first game, and the team is focused on maintaining their momentum as they prepare for next year’s ICC World Cup hosted in India.
India has showcased impressive form recently, including a 2-1 win in the preceding T20I series against the West Indies. The squad is also exploring new talent after a disappointing outing in the UAE. Pratika Rawal, one of the debutants, made a significant impact by scoring a solid 40 runs off 69 balls during a century-plus opening partnership with vice-captain Smriti Mandhana in her first international match.
Concerns regarding Harmanpreet’s fitness, which led to her missing the last two T20Is due to a knee issue, were alleviated as she played confidently in the first ODI. Smriti Mandhana, who led the team in Kaur’s absence and had scored fifties in three consecutive T20Is, continued her excellent form with a classy 91 runs off 102 balls. She will be keen to extend her impressive streak in the upcoming matches.
Renuka Singh, who was awarded Player of the Match in the first ODI, will aim to replicate her five-wicket haul and continue to challenge the West Indies with her sharp bowling.
On the other side, the West Indies need to improve significantly to level the series. Senior players such as Hayley Matthews, Deandra Dottin, Shemaine Campbelle, and Afy Fletcher must step up to provide the spark their team needs.
