India Sets New Benchmark Against Australia in Women’s World Cup 2025
Historic Milestone for Smriti Mandhana
In an impressive display during the Women’s World Cup group match on Sunday, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana made history by becoming the first woman to score 1,000 runs in a calendar year in One Day Internationals (ODIs). Her remarkable innings of 80 runs off just 66 balls contributed significantly to India’s formidable total of 330 against Australia.
Strong Start by Indian Openers
Mandhana, alongside Pratika Rawal, established a solid foundation with a remarkable opening partnership of 155 runs. Rawal contributed 75 runs from 96 balls, including 10 boundaries and a six, marking the tournament’s first century opening stand.
Key Contributions Up the Order
As the innings progressed, other players also made vital contributions to maintain momentum. Harleen Deol scored 38 runs, while Harmanpreet Kaur added 22. Jemimah Rodrigues and Richa Ghosh finished with quick-fire scores of 33 off 21 and 32 off 22 balls, respectively. Despite a late collapse, India was eventually bowled out in 48.5 overs.
Australian Bowling Response
Australia’s bowlers showed resilience in the latter part of the innings. Annabel Sutherland was particularly impressive, claiming 5 wickets for 40 runs while Sophie Molineux took 3 for 75, helping to restrict India’s scoring opportunities in the final overs.
Chase Set for Record
With India setting a target of 331 runs, Australia is now posed with chasing the highest target in Women’s ODI history. The previous record stands at 302/4, achieved by Sri Lanka against South Africa last year.
Toss and Team Adjustments
Aussie skipper Alyssa Healy won the toss and opted to bowl first, signaling a tactical approach. Notably, Australia made one change to their lineup, bringing in spin all-rounder Molineux in place of Georgia Wareham. In contrast, India retained the same XI that played in their previous match against South Africa.
Captains’ Insights
“The pitch looks better than what we had in the last game. Same XI. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. It’s about how you bounce back,” remarked Harmanpreet Kaur, emphasizing her confidence in the squad despite prior setbacks.
Similarly, Alyssa Healy noted, “Got dewy last evening while training. Hopefully can slide on the bat… But when you come up against a really good opposition like India, you need to put everything together.”
