Background of the Bihar Elections
The results from the recent Bihar elections were announced, showcasing a decisive win for the BJP-led NDA coalition, which secured 206 seats compared to the Mahagathbandhan’s 35 seats.
Sharad Pawar’s Concerns
Following the election outcome, NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar expressed his concerns regarding the transparency of the electoral process. He drew attention to the significant impact of a financial incentive program aimed at women voters, where Rs 10,000 was deposited into their accounts prior to the election.
“During the Bihar polling, I had spoken to some people who told me that women voters had taken the elections in their hands… It means the plan to deposit Rs 10,000 in their accounts has made an impact,” he noted during a press interaction in Baramati.
Questioning Election Integrity
Pawar highlighted that similar practices were observed in Maharashtra, where financial assistance was also distributed through government initiatives like the Ladki Bahin Yojana, raising questions about the nature of political influence on voters.
He urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to investigate the implications of such monetary distributions, emphasizing the potential erosion of public trust in democratic processes:
“If those who are in power decide to face the elections by distributing money, then it will affect the confidence of the people,” he warned.
Reactions from the Ruling Party
In response to Pawar’s statements, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called for the opposition to engage in self-reflection rather than placing blame. He remarked:
“After their defeat, the opposition should accept it, acknowledge the mistakes and engage in introspection. Our opposition however does not want to introspect,” he asserted.
Fadnavis defended the NDA’s initiatives, claiming that the electorate appreciated the welfare schemes implemented by the ruling party.
