Concerns Rise Over Harassment of Women in Montrose Area
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Women in the Montrose neighborhood are expressing their fear as a bearded man on a bicycle continues to harass them, demanding money and resorting to verbal abuse when they refuse. Some accounts indicate that his behavior has escalated to violence.
Incident Captured on Surveillance
Recent surveillance footage reveals the man bothering a woman on Tuesday morning while she walked her dog on Roseland near Harold. The video captures him shouting, “I know you got a dollar, (expletive)” as he follows her along the sidewalk. Seconds later, the sound of something falling is heard, accompanied by the woman’s scream.
Personal Encounters with the Harasser
Katherine, who has experienced a similar encounter, described her frightening moment. On Wednesday evening, while walking at the corner of Marshall and Audubon Place, she found herself face-to-face with the man.
“He approached me and yelled, ‘Why the (expletive) weren’t you listening to me? Why did you just ignore me when I was trying to talk to you?’ I apologized and told him I didn’t hear him. Then he demanded, ‘Give me a dollar. I need a dollar.’ I replied that I had no cash,” Katherine recounted.
She reported that the man dismounted his bike and swung at her. “Had I not moved out of the way, he would have hit me,” she stated.
Multiple Reports from Local Women
Eyewitness News spoke to another woman who also encountered this aggressive individual on Colquitt last month. During one incident, he reportedly bounced a ball off her head before cycling away.
Another woman from Upper Kirby shared her experience of being followed by the man down Harold while he yelled insults at her on Wednesday.
Community Concern and Desires for Safety
Margaret, Katherine’s sister, commented on the unsettling situation, saying, “He knows what he’s doing. It’s really messed up and scary.” She expressed her anger, noting that even though she feels unnoticed as a woman on the street, her concern extends to her friends and other women in the area who might also be targeted.
Police Calls for Action
As of now, Houston police have not identified the man captured in the surveillance footage as a suspect, which is why Eyewitness News has refrained from releasing his image. Local authorities encourage individuals who experience harassment to file a police report to ensure community safety.
