Women’s Golf Team Prepares for a Promising Season at Hope College
As the new season approaches, the Hope College women’s golf team is set to build on its past experiences with a blend of returning athletes and fresh talent. Head coach Megan Radaz, now in her second year, is optimistic about the team’s potential for improvement over last year’s performance.
Team Composition
This season, the Flying Dutch roster includes 12 players, comprising three seniors, four juniors, and five freshmen. Coach Radaz has noted significant growth among returning players, particularly the senior class. “I’ve seen a lot of great growth from the seniors just in the last year and seen them step up,” Radaz remarked. Alongside their progress, the new freshmen have also shown promise, which bodes well for team dynamics.
Goals for the Season
The team’s primary objective this year is to surpass its fifth-place finish in the 108-hole MIAA (Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association) seasonal standings from the previous year. Hope’s performance at the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll reflects this ambition, where they are again projected to finish fifth.
Focus on Development
In pursuit of these goals, the team is concentrating on enhancing both their technical skills and mental approach to the game. “We’re working hard on the mental part of golf and course management, including a sports performance specialist,” Radaz explained. This focus aims to teach players how to navigate various situations on the course more effectively and mitigate high scores during rounds.
Key Roster Players
The Flying Dutch will return several standout performers from last season, including senior Sara Muir, junior Jaiden Winters, and junior Allyson Zuidema, who were among the team’s leading scorers. Last season, Winters led the team with an average of 84.67 strokes in MIAA rounds, while Zuidema and Muir averaged 85.97 and 89.33 strokes, respectively. Additional experience comes from seniors Caydee Constant and Hannah Finch, both of whom add depth to the lineup.
Upcoming Schedule
The season will kick off with a 36-hole tournament against Calvin University on August 29-30. The first day will see players starting at Thornapple Pointe Golf Club at 7:30 a.m., followed by the second day at Hope’s home course, Clearbrook Golf Club, at 2 p.m. Furthermore, the squad will participate in four fall MIAA rounds, beginning on September 22 at Thornapple Pointe, leading to the determination of the MIAA champion after a total of 108 holes.
Conclusion
With the combination of experienced upperclassmen and enthusiastic newcomers, the Hope College women’s golf team is geared up for a competitive season. The team’s efforts in skill development and mental toughness will be crucial as they seek to enhance their standings within the MIAA.
