Historic Moments at The Sports Bra in Portland
PORTLAND, Ore. (KPTV) – The Sports Bra, a pioneering women’s sports bar in Portland, witnessed a bustling crowd for the NCAA championship on Sunday, with attendees lining up outside the venue. Inside, patrons enjoyed a unique piece of sports history from last year’s regionals held in Portland, where a three-point line was mismeasured by nearly a foot.
“There was so much excitement having these incredible teams here,” said Jenny Nguyen, founder of The Sports Bra.
Nguyen fondly recalls the NCAA regionals from the previous year. She was present at the Moda Center when Texas faced off against North Carolina State, a match that gained national attention.
“I saw people around me receiving alerts on their phones, and then someone tapped my shoulder saying there was news about a three-point line being off,” Nguyen recounted. “Even from where I was sitting, it was obvious that the three-point line wasn’t right.”
The Line That Made History
The NCAA determined that one of the three-point lines was drawn nine inches shorter than the standard, ultimately holding its contractor accountable. Following this revelation, the line was redrawn and now holds a prominent place above the bar at The Sports Bra.
“It feels like a museum artifact, and it beautifully tells a story,” Nguyen expressed passionately.
A floor installer, a big supporter of women’s sports, visited The Sports Bra during the tournament. He mentioned that he keeps reclaimed flooring and extended an offer for the infamous three-point line. Nguyen jumped at the opportunity without hesitation.
“Events like these help spotlight women’s sports,” she noted.
Transforming Mistakes into Moments
Nguyen emphasizes that this is more than just a blunder; it’s about revising the narrative and celebrating a notable moment in sports history.
“This aligns with the essence of what The Sports Bra embodies,” she said. “Even though the incident might have seemed negative, having it as part of our history feels destined.”
