Empowering Women in Cook Islands Politics
Te Tuhi Kelly, the leader of the Progressive Party of the Cook Islands, is advocating for greater female involvement in politics. He encourages women to engage with the political process, policy-making, and governance, particularly as preparations ramp up for the 2026 elections.
On his social media platforms earlier this month, Kelly invited women to rise to the occasion, embrace the challenge, and consider joining his Progressive Party in the upcoming elections.
In a conversation with Cook Islands News, Kelly acknowledged the long-standing tradition of strong female leadership in the Cook Islands. According to him, women have consistently showcased their leadership abilities in families, businesses, communities, and cultural contexts.
“To the women considering a run in 2026, my message is clear: don’t wait for anyone’s permission to take the lead. Your unique voice, experiences, and insights are invaluable. Step forward confidently, seek mentorship, and build a strong support network,” Kelly urged.
“Although politics can be challenging, it is also a domain where significant transformation occurs. If there’s an area in your community that requires improvement, take the initiative to be the change,” he continued.
Kelly emphasized the importance of training, networking, and forging alliances in this endeavor.
“Many of us, myself included, are keen to support women stepping into leadership roles. Women contribute essential perspectives and focus on critical areas such as inclusive policies, social development, education, health, and economic empowerment—elements vital to the future of the Cook Islands,” he stated.
Highlighting the male-dominated landscape of Cook Islands politics, Kelly noted that many decisions are made without input from half the population.
“We need more women in political positions to foster balanced decision-making, diversify leadership, and cultivate a more representative democracy,” he added.
“Having women leaders inspires the next generation of girls, demonstrating that they too can aspire to leadership positions,” Kelly remarked.
Following the establishment of the Vaine Toa Forum aimed at aspiring women political leaders, Kelly observed a surge of interest among women eager for change and a desire to engage in a movement that emphasizes good governance, equity, and progress.
“Many women express frustration with the current political environment, seeking a platform where their voices are acknowledged. As the sole male member of the Progressive Vaine Toa Forum, I am witnessing women actively participate in meaningful discussions at both this level and within their circles of trust, including family and friends,” he explained.
Kelly assured that the Progressive Party is committed to actively fostering and promoting women’s participation, translating this commitment into actionable support.
“This includes mentorship initiatives, training programs, funding opportunities, and leadership roles specifically designed for women, alongside collaborations with like-minded women’s groups both regionally and globally,” he concluded.
