Empowering Women: Prioritizing Self-Care and Career Development
The HERbernation Conference champions a message that encourages women to make self-care, mental health, and professional growth top priorities. Emphasizing the importance of personal time, the conference demonstrated how such moments can rejuvenate women, enhance productivity, and foster mental well-being.
“Every woman deserves her ‘HER’ moment, allowing her to reclaim her body and implement lifestyle changes for improved health and a fulfilling life,” was a key takeaway from the inaugural HERbernation Conference held in Lagos on Friday.
Organized by Ozioma Ubabukoh, the Principal Consultant of Plexus, the event was a celebration of womanhood under the theme “Rise, Renew, Reignite.” It offered a platform for women to connect, share their experiences, and engage in meaningful discussions about the challenges they face, while learning from one another’s journeys.
Ubabukoh expressed, “HERbernation is more than just an event; it is a sanctuary where women can pause, reflect, and realign with their purpose.”
Mental Health Awareness
The event also delved into mental health, highlighting the growing awareness surrounding it. Dr. Ruth Ebe-Emordi, a medical professional and mental health advocate, emphasized, “Our mental health significantly influences women in reaching their fullest potential.” She bravely shared her own mental health challenges, challenging the stigma that associates mental health issues with insanity.
“It’s more complex than that. I faced depression during my university years without seeking medical assistance. Eventually, I found support and later sought professional help. It’s crucial to acknowledge and address the signs that something may be wrong. You must be your own advocate before you can help others. Don’t hesitate to reach out to the right people,” she urged.
Transformation Through Adversity
Efe Obioma, a public relations expert and author, shared her journey of converting personal grief into a beacon of hope through writing.
Elizabeth King-Wali, CEO of 4Stone Capital, inspired attendees with her story of overcoming a decade of childlessness to become a mother of three in just two years. She encouraged women to focus on personal development during waiting periods, stressing, “Motherhood does not define your worth. Don’t let any aspect of your life stall; continue to pursue your passions and goals.”
Overcoming Self-Doubt
In the context of professional growth, Ogechi Eleojo, an expert in career development, addressed the struggles women face with imposter syndrome. “Self-doubt often holds women back. Many grapple with feelings of inadequacy that prevent self-expression. It’s important to seek mentorship, ask for help, and enhance your skills,” she advised.
The HERbernation Conference served as a powerful reminder of the necessity of self-care, the importance of mental health advocacy, resilience, and the continuous quest for personal and professional growth among women.
