Hefazat-e-Islam Rallies Against Women Affairs Reform Commission
Key Demands Presented
On Saturday, the Hefazat-e-Islam organization called for the immediate annulment of the women affairs reform commission, labeling its findings as incompatible with the Quran. This was part of a broader 12-point demand announced during a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka.
Historical Context and Recent Developments
Hefazat leaders also insisted on accountability for the Shapla Square massacre that occurred in 2013, alongside a request for the dismissal of various charges against Hefazat members from the past 15 years of Awami League governance, a period marked by significant unrest.
Hefazat amir Muhibbullah Babunagari articulated these demands through a written statement at the rally, signifying serious opposition to any governmental actions based on the commission’s recommendations.
Formation of a New Commission Requested
In addition to seeking the cancellation of the existing women affairs reform commission, Babunagari urged the establishment of a new body to handle related issues more effectively.
Recognition of Educational Credentials
In a noteworthy context, in November 2018, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina received the ‘Mother of Qaumi’ title after the government endorsed the Dawra-e-Hadith (Takmil) degree from the Qaumi madrassah system, equating it with postgraduate education. This rite took place during a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan, overseen by Shah Ahmad Shafi, then-chairman of Al-Hiyatul Ulya Lil-Zami’atil Qaumiya Bangladesh.
Future Actions Announced
During the rally, Hefazat secretary general Sajedur Rahman declared plans for nationwide protests following Friday prayers on May 23 to emphasize their demands. Furthermore, joint secretary general Mamunul Haque claimed that legislation intended to reform women’s issues has disrespected Islamic values, as per the sentiments of the majority population.
Haque extended a two-month deadline for the interim government to retract the charges against Hefazat leaders and warned of potential actions if the stipulations are not met.
Calls for Vigilance Against External Threats
Haque also urged citizens to be alert against any perceived threats to national sovereignty, particularly in relation to discussions about establishing a ‘humanitarian corridor’ for the troubled regions of Myanmar.
