Hawaii Women’s Volleyball Team Crowned Preseason Favorites in Big West Conference
On Thursday, the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine women’s volleyball team was named the top contender for the upcoming Big West Conference season, narrowly edging out Cal Poly in the preseason coaches’ poll. The selection comes as the Wahine prepare for their final season in the BWC.
Close Competition
In a tightly contested vote, the Rainbow Wahine secured 94 points, just two points ahead of Cal Poly, which tallied 92. Both teams received five first-place votes, while UC Santa Barbara garnered the remaining top vote.
Last Season’s Performance
Last year, Hawaii finished the season with an impressive record of 21 wins and 10 losses, including a 13-5 mark in conference play. Although they finished second in the regular season behind Cal Poly, the team triumphed in the Big West tournament, marking their 31st consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.
Key Players and Changes
As they move forward, the Wahine will welcome a blend of new talent and returning players. Middle blocker Bri Gunderson, a recent transfer from Eastern Washington, is the sole representative from Hawaii on the preseason all-conference team. The team faces the challenge of replacing crucial players, including all-conference setter Kate Lang and national kills leader Caylen Alexander.
Upcoming Season Kickoff
Hawaii’s season will officially commence with the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic, where they are set to face Marquette on August 29.
