Hawaiʻi Commission Takes Action to Safeguard Women and Girls from Federal Policies

The Hawaiʻi State Commission on the Status of Women is actively working to safeguard the rights of women and girls amidst regressive policies enacted by the current federal government. Chairwoman Jennifer Stotter expressed strong opposition to these developments, stating, “The Hawaiʻi State Commission on the Status of Women unequivocally opposes the federal administration’s assault on women’s rights and opportunities. We are witnessing deliberate attempts to roll back hard-won protections in education, economic security, health care access, and workplace equity.”

This commission, a government agency dedicated to promoting gender equality in Hawaiʻi, is proactively collaborating with state legislators, community groups, healthcare providers, and business leaders to establish a robust framework aimed at protecting women and girls from federal policy shifts.

“Our commission is taking decisive action to ensure that federal policies designed to marginalize women will not succeed in Hawaiʻi,” Stotter added.

The commission’s multifaceted approach involves exploring legislative alternatives to counteract federal funding cuts, expanding state-run programs, fostering partnerships between public and private sectors, and raising awareness about legal rights and available resources.

Evidence indicates that everyday sexism can adversely impact women’s well-being on multiple levels, including their physical and mental health. Consequently, the commission has highlighted several federal actions that pose significant risks:

  • Reductions in educational programs that benefit women and girls.
  • Revisions to workplace discrimination protections.
  • Limitations on health care coverage related to comprehensive health needs for women.
  • Systematic dismantling of diversity initiatives essential for advancing women’s roles in the workforce.

In response, commission officials are collaborated with state agencies and community organizations to develop countermeasures that will preserve these essential protections. They have identified key focus areas, including:

  • Enhancing child care subsidies and policies related to family leave.
  • Establishing state-level protections to secure equal pay.
  • Strengthening social safety nets for immigrants and other vulnerable groups.
  • Maintaining Title IX protections against discrimination and sexual violence.
  • Promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives that aim to address historical discrimination.
  • Ensuring comprehensive healthcare encompasses reproductive and maternal health services.
  • Strengthening anti-discrimination protections within employment contexts.
  • Improving mechanisms for preventing and reporting sexual harassment.
  • Encouraging women’s leadership across various industries.

Recent advocacy efforts have already yielded results, such as the successful push for a $6 million investment in family planning services following the abrupt withholding of Hawaiʻi’s Title X federal family planning grant funds by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

“While the federal administration continues to target policies that support women’s advancement, Hawaiʻi will stand firm in its commitment to gender equity,” stated Executive Director Llasmin Chaine. “These federal actions represent a coordinated effort to undermine women’s rights, but we are equally determined to maintain the progress we’ve made and continue moving forward. No woman in Hawaiʻi should lose opportunities or protections because of regressive federal policies.”

Women who feel they have been adversely affected by recent federal actions, despite their protected rights, are encouraged to share their experiences. Inquiries can be sent via email to dhs.hscsw@dhs.hawaii.gov.
