Empowering Women Through Fitness
The HT FiiT gym, founded by fitness coach Hanh Tran, is dedicated to helping women stay active and healthy. Equipped with a crèche, the gym allows busy moms to focus on their workouts without worrying about childcare.
A Safe Space for Women
With years of experience training women in co-ed gyms, Hanh recognized a significant demand for a female-only fitness environment.
“Many women expressed discomfort exercising alongside men,” she shared with the Recorder. “This often affected their ability to feel comfortable, whether it was taking off their headscarves or wearing lighter attire to beat the heat.”
Hanh’s vision was to establish a sanctuary where women can freely concentrate on their health and fitness goals, unencumbered by societal expectations.
Addressing Health Disparities
Research indicates that the Asian community often exhibits lower levels of physical activity compared to the broader population.
Recent government statistics highlighted obesity as a pressing public health issue. This condition is often linked to serious health problems like cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes, which can shorten life expectancy.
Many Asian women face a heightened risk of obesity and related health issues, and yet, Hanh found they are less likely to seek assistance for weight management.
“I’ve observed these challenges within my own community,” she notes. “This fitness studio transcends a typical gym; it serves as a safe haven where women can work towards becoming their best selves.”
Cultural Barriers to Fitness
There are also cultural expectations that pressure Asian women to prioritize household duties, often deeming exercise inappropriate or selfish.
However, engaging in regular physical activity significantly lowers the risk of diseases, including diabetes, osteoporosis, breast cancer, and respiratory illnesses.
Holistic Approach to Women’s Fitness
Situated on Horns Road, the new gym aims to address these health challenges through a comprehensive fitness program. The offerings include strength training and cardiovascular exercises suitable for all fitness levels, aimed at fostering physical strength and self-assurance.
HT FiiT also features a dedicated play area, where children are cared for while their mothers pursue their fitness journeys in this inclusive and supportive environment for women from diverse backgrounds.
