Hancock Women’s Soccer Team Prepares for New Season
After a remarkable two-year stretch, the Hancock women’s soccer team faced challenges in the last season. Moving into the new season, there is renewed optimism as they look to recapture their previous momentum.
Historic Achievements
In 2022, the Bulldogs made history by clinching their first-ever conference title, sharing the Western State Conference North Division crown. Their success continued with a play-in victory over Orange Coast College, marking the squad’s first postseason win.
Although Hancock won the WSC North championship outright, they were eliminated in the regional’s first round, and unfortunately, did not qualify for postseason play last year.
Looking Ahead: New Season, New Energy
The season opener is set against Santa Monica, a match that many players and their veteran coach, Billy Vinnedge, feel confident about. Vinnedge, who also coaches the men’s soccer team, had to contend with personal challenges last year, particularly the loss of his mother shortly after the previous season ended.
“I lost my mom last year,” Vinnedge shared. “She passed away right when the season ended.”
This year, Vinnedge expressed optimism, stating that both the women’s and men’s teams are revitalized with new energy, supported by a coaching staff that totals seven members.
A Robust Roster and Strong Leadership
The current roster boasts 26 players, with 11 sophomores and 15 freshmen. Among them is goalkeeper Sam Patchin, recognized as an All-Conference player in 2023, who is returning for her sophomore season. On the defensive end, sophomore Ruby Graciliano and midfielder Daniela Mendoza are expected to play pivotal roles in leading the team.
“We’re definitely a more tight-knit team this year, on the field and off,” Mendoza noted, emphasizing the strengthened camaraderie among the players.
Building Towards Success
The Bulldogs have committed to rigorous offseason training, focusing on cardio to enhance fitness, rather than simply relying on scrimmages. Graciliano expressed her belief in the team’s potential for postseason qualification, stating, “I think we can, actually.”
Vinnedge highlighted the team’s defensive strength, stating, “I think we have all the pieces on the women’s team to get the defense back to where they were.” he also remarked on the impressive depth across all playing positions, hinting at a promising future.
“We had a great summer. As the season goes along and we become more of a family, I think we’ll just be better and better,” he added.
Conclusion
With the season kicking off soon, the Hancock women’s soccer team is poised to make a strong comeback, driven by a blend of experienced guidance and youthful enthusiasm, aiming for another shot at postseason glory.
